As we travel through harvest season, the entire nation of India comes together for Uttarayan (or Makar Sankranti) to celebrate the Sun God and its movement northward. During this time, there’s a certain ambiance that charges the air and the people who harvest the turmeric from the ground. Here’s a small peek into the magic.
The Joy of Uttarayan
Uttarayan is an auspicious time of year marking the beginning of spring. The name comes from Uttar, meaning “north,” and Ayan, meaning “movement.”
Uttarayan refers to both a time frame and a yearly festival. This period - from January 14th to March 21st - is considered a time of grace and enlightenment. It’s when we celebrate the Sun God that blesses all living beings with its Prana - its life energy.
Harvesting the World’s Best Turmeric
Uttarayan has a lot of significance for us at Mt. Meru, as it is also the harvest time for our precious turmeric, which we lovingly call “the herb of the sun.”
On the day of the harvest, farmers dress up in their beautiful golden harvest dresses. They start the day with a Puja to take in the blessings of the Sun God that bestows all living beings with its Prana.

Then, it’s time to unearth the turmeric, which has been growing inside Mother Earth for nine months. In the evenings, after the work is done, the farmers enjoy traditional folk dances and festive dinners.
Hand-Selecting the best
After this joyful time, we at Mt. Meru hand-select the best children rhizomes from the crop and take our time washing, slicing, sun drying, and finally grinding it with stone. It is this slower, longer process that ensures that the Prana of the turmeric stays intact to benefit your immune system.
